I have recently begun to see my career as a journey from Impressionism to Contemporary Abstraction.
The process of creating a painting, for me, reaches many levels. Some are basic and practical. Some evolve from a place that I cannot define. . Since I came late to painting my motivation has always been to paint daily. Good weather, bad weather, traveling or at home I take paint brush in hand, put myself out of doors and that hard to define element takes over. The color and the texture of the paint combine to express the atmosphere and energy that I feel out in nature. I want always for the viewer to see colors, shapes, and textures they did not before realize were there. If a viewer can go on to glimpse some of these colors or aura in their daily lives my painting has succeeded.
As my painting has evolved, become larger in scope, I now split my time between studio and the outdoors. I will often do several small studies, take them back to the studio and let the paint fly. The result is the vibrancy of outdoor light and color with the shapes and composition pared down to their essence.
My training is varied, having studied with Sidney Willis, Don Stone, Lois Griffel and Charles Sovek, all artists who placed pure color at the top of their motivation for painting.
My work has shown at The Salmagundi Club in New York City as well as the American Artists Professional League, The Audubon Artists Association, and The Currier Museum of Art in Manchester NH, The Dunedin Fine Arts Center, Dunedin Florida, The Sarasota Center for the Arts, Sarasota Florida, The Indian Rocks Beach Center for the Arts, Indian Rocks Beach Florida and many private & public collections.
